I had struggles and failures in elementary, high school, and even in university with academic achievement. This was partially due to my own shortcomings and partially due to not having help and guidance. My parents did not speak English and were not able to help me with my schoolwork. We also couldn’t afford to pay tutors. Like today, my classrooms were too big for teachers to pay much individual attention to my difficulties. Over time, I have become better at teaching myself about what is needed to succeed. I was the first person in my family to attend university and now I am working toward my PhD.
I want to pass on what I have learned to make it easier for others so that they don’t have to teach themselves. This is not a purely unselfish motive, because I get personal satisfaction from teaching. It makes me feel like I am making the most useful contribution possible to other people and to society in general. From helping my peers to coaching my younger brother’s soccer team and from teaching university classes to tutoring high school students, I find every teaching experience to be interesting.
Keep on learning,
